About

The Sporades Archipelago is located in the Aegean Sea, South-East from the Pelion Peninsula of the Continental Greece and it is composed of 11 islands. Only 4 of these islands have inhabitants in this beautiful and wild side of Greece, the rest of them remaining a virgin paradise for birds.

The Sporades Islands are one of the most hunted holiday destinations due to the variety of delicious foods and sceneries they have to offer. The pine guarded gulfs hide some of the most gorgeous beaches in the Aegean Sea.

Islands

Skiathos

For the “animal-party” type of tourist, looking for modern beaches and nightlife, Skiathos is the perfect island. And it also has its quiet beach, for when you had too much of a party and you’re in need of a break. There is an international airport located on the island and there are plenty of ferryboats leaving to the other islands of this group.

Besides the old city, other points of attraction are Banana Beach and Koukounaries Beach – the last one is declared a natural reserve. So, if you are on Skiathos, it’s a must that you see one of these beaches and drink a cocktail there.

Skopelos

Another full of life holiday destination is Skopelos. It’s not as commercial as its sister, Skiathos, therefore it offers a bit more of peace and quiet and traditional Greek flavours.

Alonnisos

For the “eco-friendly” type of tourist, Alonnisos is one out of six islands that has been designated as an “Eco-Island” by the European Community. Alonnisos is located in the heart of the Protected Marine Park, which is composed of a number of small, uninhabited islands scattered around in the Sporades area. The park was established in 1992 with the purpose of protecting one of the most threatened species in the world, the Mediterranean seal, as well as some rare flora and fauna species.

Temperature

The air temperature is usually between 10-29 Celsius degrees, with highs up to 25-30 Celsius degrees during summer. During the month of May the temperature is somwhere between 20-26 Celsius degrees. The water temperature doesn’t normally drop under 13 Celsius degrees and during the summer months is around 23 Celsius degrees. During May, the temperature fluctuates between 17-20 Celsius degrees. There is a low risk of rainfall.

Wind speed

The prevailing wind in Greece and Turkey was named Meltemi. It bloes from the North or North-East and most of the times it is active during the day. After sunset it loses the intensity and most of the times you don’t even feel it at night.

In the North Sporades Islands Meltemi blows irregularly. But eve when it does, we always have the option of cjoosing a route through the South side of the islands. This way we will most likely not feel it. The only area where we will feel its blow is between the islands, for about 35-40 minutes.

The FunSailing skippers permanently receive up to date data regarding the wind, its direction and intensity, and can keep the crew up to date regarding the daily crossings.
